Memories Make Me Think of My Mum

Today I was thinking about my mum. She was a depression-era kid and she made do with what she had. I have tried to adopt a minimalist lifestyle. My mum on the other hand never threw away anything she thought she might have a use for at a later time.

When I left home I didn’t want to have so much clutter. Besides I figured, what the heck, my mum didn’t live that far away and if I needed something she would have it. That was a long time ago.

Sewing

She was a great seamstress. She knew good material and sometimes she would go to a thrift store, or in those days it was called the Superfluity Shop, and buy a larger sized women’s dress if the material was nice. She took it home and unpicked the seams, washed it, ironed it, and then laid a pattern for little girl dresses for my sisters and me. Cut it, sewed it, nobody knew the difference, and my sisters and I looked great.

I think there were a lot of mothers of that generation who did what they had to do to make do. We didn’t have a lot of money but we had the basics, enough to eat, and a lot of love.

I had 2 sisters and a brother and we all were in dance lessons. Any extra money my mum had, was put towards our lessons. Because she…
