I was always someone that was happy with one or two good friends when I was young. I was quite shy. I know, hard to believe, but when I was young I lived a lot in my head.

I always had family that loved me and when we weren’t in school I just played with everyone in our small neighborhood. We were a group. But at school, I was scared that I wouldn’t be liked or accepted. I felt that If I had one friend I wouldn’t be alone.

I was so excited to leave home at 18 and start living my life. It was going to be so exciting! Once I left home I thought this was going to be my time, This was the time to be who I wanted to be.

Nursing School

I was very fortunate as I lived about 45 minutes from the nursing school I went to. It was far enough away from home to have some independence but close enough to go home if I needed or wanted to. Having that safety net allowed me to grow and become independent.

My parents were still nervous about my living away from home. They knew, however, that after starting training I would be working shifts and it wasn’t a good idea to come home late at night, by bus, from the big city.
