When looking at the Nicotinic plants, we see most ingestions will cause only mild toxicity except for tobaccos such as commercial smoking tobacco and tree tobacco (nicotiana Glauca).

Nicotiana Glauca is usually over 6 feet tall but can grow to over 20 feet! Its yellow tubular flowers are about two inches long and less than one inch wide.

This species can pose a threat to native species by outcompeting them for resources and is classified as an invasive species in many parts of the world. Every part of the plant is potentially poisonous to humans and livestock. The beetle Malabris aculeata has been successfully deployed with this plant as a biological control agent.

Toxic Dose

All alkaloids in this group have initial stimulant effects followed by depressant effects. These can occur in the cardiovascular system (heart) and the central nervous system.

The toxic dose is variable. Toxin concentration varies with growing conditions and season.

Pharmacokinetics

This plant is readily absorbed following ingestion.
