Helping Out Can Help
Keeping Busy at Our Complex
Today will be a busy day. My next-door neighbor and I will volunteer at the flu vaccine clinic that will be run at our clubhouse. We start out getting the place set up. There will be two pharmacists arriving at around 9 am and then hopefully they will set up their equipment and then give both my friend Sheila and me the first flu vaccines.
After getting their vaccines, everyone needs to wait in the clubhouse for 15 minutes to ensure they won’t have a reaction to it. It’s unlikely anyone will have a reaction, most people just want to go home.
Now my job is not only to monitor for any allergic reactions to the vaccine but to convince them to stay for the 15 minutes!
I am a very social person and will know most of the people that come in to receive the flu shot. I hopefully will get to know anyone new to the complex and welcome them to our community. That is one part of my job.
The other is to really watch for any slight signs of a reaction. My complex is made up of almost exclusively seniors. About 75% are couples and can keep an eye on one another but the rest are singles.
This is the group that is very important to watch. I will have the fireplace on and the chairs appropriately spaced. I will laugh and joke with the people coming in.
